Become a Member

As Super Sonic is community-based, our rehearsals are always open to the public. We are not rigid in our requirements to become a member. If you want to join us, all you need to do is attend regular rehearsals, learn our material, show your commitment to the group, and do your best to be available to perform as you progress to that level.

Rehearsals

Rehearsals and classes are weekly on Sundays and Wednesdays in Balboa Park. These are FREE and open to the public; we welcome new members and performers.

Sundays - Drum lessons are from 12pm-2:30pm; dance lessons are from 1pm-2:30pm. We meet on the grass in Pepper Grove Park - just north of the World Beat (2100 Park Blvd) and Centro Cultural de la Raza (2125 Park Blvd) buildings at Park Blvd and Inspiration Way. View map.

Wednesdays - We rehearse inside the World Beat Center, 8-9 pm. Drum rehearsals are every Wednesday. Dance rehearsals are alternating Wednesdays and are for designated performers only but anyone interested is welcome to come and observe.

Meetings

We have a weekly meeting in a casual atmosphere after our Sunday rehearsal at 3pm. This is our opportunity to plan for upcoming events and discuss group-related topics. New members are encouraged to attend to learn how the group works.

As we are a non-profit organization, we also have regularly scheduled board meetings where our formal group of board members address some of the more substantial group issues such as funding, leadership, planning, and topics related to the organization as a whole. These meetings are open to all members and to the public, not just board members. If you would like to attend and observe, feel free! However, as this is a formal organization, please respect that these meetings often have restricted agendas to be addressed by official board members only. These meetings are listed on our schedule of events.

Becoming a Performer

Performing with Super Sonic is fun and a great opportunity to share your love of samba. However it holds a degree of responsibility and requires a basic level of practiced skill since, as a performer, you represent Super Sonic and an element of Brazilian culture to our audiences.

While Super Sonic does not hold formal auditions, performers are selected from a group of qualified and available members who show a dedication to the group as well as advancement in technique. Performers are primarily selected by the dance/drum leaders or event coordinators based on the requirements for a particular show.

The opportunity to perform is not available to all members automatically. To become a performer, a member must first qualify according to the following:

  • By showing commitment to the group through regular attendance and participation
  • By learing basic drum rhythms or dance routines specific to our group (depending on if you're a drummer or dancer)
  • By showing your skill level to the drum/dancer leader
  • By having been 'invited' by the drum/dancer leader to perform at whatever level is appropriate to your skill
